No GPay, No stop for ATM: Chennai auto driver’s rules go viral on X

Imagine being in an IT hub and denied the option to pay through UPI transactions. It is hard to believe, but this is what happened to a commuter traveling to Chennai. The auto driver had strict rules pasted inside his auto: “Gpay not available. No stop for ATM withdrawal.”

A user, identified as No Context Suveeshared her experience on X (formerly Twitter). She posted a picture of the auto’s interior with the message displayed, “Gpay not available. No stop for ATM withdrawal.” Alongside the image, she captioned it, “It was nice knowing y’all.”

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), facilitating instant money transfers via mobile devices, has emerged as the fastest-growing payment mode in India. Since its introduction, digital transactions in the country have witnessed exponential growth.

According to government data, as of December 2023, UPI transactions grew from Rs 1 lakh crore in FY 2017-18 to Rs 139 lakh crore in FY 2022-23 in value, at a CAGR of 168%.

A significant portion of the population now relies on digital payments, eschewing the need for cash.

However, despite the widespread use of online transactions, some auto drivers and vendors have yet to embrace this trend.

In the comments section, she mentioned booking the ride through an application and expressed surprise that the driver refused UPI payments. She noted that the driver hadn’t communicated this before they reached the pickup location.

Since being shared, the post has garnered over two lakh views and seven thousand likes on the microblogging platform.

One commenter expressed, “my worst nightmare.” Another speculated, “Uncle must have put this outside the auto instead of inside.”
