New lido set to open in UK city for the first time in decades

A MAJOR UK city has revealed plans to open a new outdoor swimming pool as part of a huge redevelopment.

Holt Town, in Manchester, is being transformed into a ‘woodland neighbourhood’.

The revamp includes 15-acres of green space and a river park – as well as a new lido.

Located between Ancoats and New Islington, it will open on Cyrus Street.

However the area will need a lot of work, as it is currently overgrown and abandoned, and often used by fly tippers.

The open-air pool will be a first for the city in 40 years, with Manchester not having any current lidos.

The Galleon, in East Didsbury, first opened in the 1930s with guests including footballer George Best.

However it closed just 50 years later and has since been built on.

And the lido at Alexandra Park also closed back in the 1980s.

Images of the new lido show the huge pool surrounded by trees, as well as a lifeguard tower.

The size of the pool and other amenities are yet to be confirmed.

Also part of the new development will be 4,500 homes, including a number of affordable options.

The town already has its own tram stop so it will be easy to get to from the city centre.

Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, said:  “Holt Town has huge potential and this is feeding our ambition to create a brand new woodland town – the first of its kind in Manchester.

“This neighbourhood will represent a people-first focus around active travel, green spaces, new play spaces for young people – and a digital first approach that will better connect the community with local services.

While an opening date is yet to be confirmed, the local council said it would take “many years” to complete.

And if you can wait a bit longer, the massive Therme Manchester is set to open in the next few years.

First announced back in 2020, the huge indoor water complex will have an all-seasons beach, swim up bars as well as 25 pools and 35 slides.

The website states: “Therme Manchester will deliver a unique wellbeing experience immersed within an expansive, multi-zoned, tropical environment with a vision to ‘reconnect to yourself, others and nature whilst having a great time doing it’.”

The project is expected to cost £250million and estimates 1.7million guests in the first year.

It has initially hoped to open by 2023, with the new date being to open in 2027 although this may be delayed again.

And here’s a brand new lido set to open in London.

Why Manchester is one of the world’s top cities

Lee Bell spoke to the Sun about what it is like to live in Manchester after it was named a top city by NYT.

Following the pandemic, I became part of the wave escaping the big smoke to settle in this quieter, more affordable city also known as “the capital of the North”.

While Manchester, like any other city, as a number of modern high-rise buildings, it has also transformed it’s iconic red brick structures into exciting new cultural venues.

Take Mayfield Depot, for instance – once a railway yard, this arts, music and culture hub is home to the massively popular Warehouse Project and is one of the best places to see a band or DJ in Manchester, in my opinion.

The city’s dining culture over the last few years has boomed too. Even food critics such as Jay Rayner are regularly celebrating what the city has to offer.

Foodies can also try one of the 17 restaurants that have been given a nod in the Michelin Guide, including Higher Ground, a British Bistro focused on seasonal food and casual dining have impressed with unique dishes and attention to detail.

If you’re a visitor looking to visit for longer than a day, there are plenty of hotels to go at, from flashy luxury offerings like Hotel Gotham on King Street to cosy boutique wonders like Forty-Seven on Peter Street.
