Arvind Kerjiwal, in yet another move days ahead of voting in Delhi, has demanded PM Modi to approve 50% concession for students travelling in Delhi Metro.
Former Chief Minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, seeking re-election in the Delhi polls, has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to approve a 50% concession for students travelling in the city’s Metro.
In a letter to PM Modi on Friday, Kejriwal said that both the Centre and the Delhi governments should manage the losses incurred in rolling out the proposal.
Notably, Delhi Metro is operated in collaboration between the Delhi and the central governments.
Kejriwal Writes To PM Modi
Mentioning that a large number of students commute through Delhi Metro on a daily basis for educational purposes, Kejriwal proposed offering 50% concession to the students “to alleviate the financial burden” from them.
“I am writing this letter to draw your attention to an important matter concerning the students of schools and colleges in Delhi. A large number of students in Delhi rely heavily on the metro for their daily commute to and from their educational institutions,” he said.
“To alleviate the financial burden on students, I propose offering a 50% concession on metro fares for students. The Delhi Metro is a joint venture between the Delhi Government and the Central Government, with equal (50:50) funding. Therefore, the cost of this concession should be equally shared by both the Delhi Government and the Central Government,” Kejriwal added.

AAP To Make Bus Rides Free For Students
He further said that the AAP is planning to make bus travel “completely free” for students and added that he “hoped” that the Prime Minister would agree to the proposal.
Notably, bus rides are free for women passengers in Delhi and now the Delhi government is planning to make it free of cost for students.
However, due to the model code of conduct in place, the decision cannot be implemented before elections, and the decision can only be enforced on the ground after the new government is formed.
Delhi is all set to go to Assembly polls on February 5 and the counting of votes will be done on February 8.
