Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) is recommending that “complete loser” former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy “get a job.”
“The former speaker needs to get a job. I think that’s the problem: He’s bored and doesn’t know what to do with himself,” Mace said during a discussion on the Politico Playbook Deep Dive podcast.
Mace was one of eight Republicans who voted to oust McCarthy from the House speakership last year. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) made the original motion to vacate.
According to Mace, it’s McCarthy who put the Republican Party’s majority “at risk.”
“He’s a complete loser. He couldn’t keep his job as speaker, and he quit on the Republican Party. He quit his job. He put our majority at risk,” she said.
Mace said she trusts current House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and prefers his leadership style to that of McCarthy.
“It was more behind closed doors, but it was equally chaotic. There was yelling, there was cursing, you know, damn near fights happening,” she recalled about McCarthy.
Mace also addressed the backlash she can get from oversharing in media interviews. The congresswoman chalked up the criticism to her gender.
“The irony is men can do it. But the minute I, a fiscally conservative woman, does it, somehow it’s not the same. … I do media interviews like a lot of my male colleagues, but they’re not getting attacked,” she said. “I don’t see Tim Scott or Lindsey Graham getting attacked the way that I do. And they’re on TV more than I am.”
McCarthy has not pretended to be cordial with those who pushed him out of the speakership. He recently spoke to reporters and lashed out at Gaetz and Mace, mocking the latter for the high turnover rate of her office.
“I just hope she gets the help to straighten out her life,” he said.
