Namrata Rao addresses conflict of interest with Salman Khan and others while filming ‘Angry Young Men’: “Was very apprehensive about being censored by the producers and families” | Hindi Movie News

Namrata Rao, a National Award-winning editor recognized for her work on the film Kahaani (2012), has made a significant transition into directing with her latest docuseries, Angry Young Men. This compelling series delves into the lives and creative journeys of iconic Bollywood screenwriters Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, exploring their impact on Indian cinema.
Produced by a powerhouse trio—Salman Khan’s production house Salman Khan Films, Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment, and Zoya Akhtar’s Tiger Baby Films—the docuseries is co-produced by the children of both screenwriters. This familial involvement brings a personal touch to the project.
In an industry where familial ties often intertwine with professional endeavors, the question of conflict of interest looms large. In an interview with Hindustan Times, while answering about her apprehensions regarding potential biases or conflict of interest from the producers, Rao expressed her initial concerns.
She recalled, “When I started shooting the docuseries, I was very apprehensive about whether I would be censored by the producers/families.”
However, she emphasized that her commitment to authenticity remained paramount. “I had a word with Zoya that I do not want to do a hagiographic piece (a term she used to describe a work that excessively glorifies its subjects) or a puff piece”
Zoya reassured her that the intention behind the docuseries was to present a balanced portrayal, acknowledging that there is already a wealth of information available about Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar online. Rao noted that it would be counterproductive to simply reiterate positive narratives about them as “really good people and amazing fathers.” This commitment to a more nuanced exploration of their lives reflects the creative integrity that Rao aims to uphold in her work.
Rao’s dedication to authenticity is further illustrated by her approach to the interviews conducted during the filming process. She was unafraid to pose challenging questions, emphasizing that her choices were driven by narrative coherence rather than external pressures. “I did ask them a lot of uncomfortable questions.”
Rao clarified that she only removed content when it did not align with the overarching narrative, “and not because anybody has told me to take it off because it doesn’t reflect well on our fathers.”
The docuseries ‘Angry Young Men’ is now streaming on OTT.
