‘My friend mocked me for food choices on holiday – she says I’m nuts’

We all have different tastes when it comes to food. While some of us love tucking into spicy food, others can’t handle the heat and would prefer something milder, for example.

No matter what your favourite food is, however, you shouldn’t judge other people for the dishes they choose to chow down on. After all, you’ve probably got some guilty pleasure food combinations that others would turn their noses up at too.

One mum has claimed she feels ’embarrassed’ after she was criticised by a friend for the food she ate while they were away on holiday at the same time.

She explained the group holiday wasn’t planned, but her friend was staying in the same caravan park as her family, so they “spent some time” together during the trip.

One evening, her friend knocked on her caravan to ask if the family wanted to join them in ordering a takeaway for dinner. But when the mum explained she brought some soup with her to eat instead, her friend simply “laughed her head off” in judgement.

In a post on Mumsnet, the woman said she’d packed several meals to feed her family throughout their holiday. She admitted they would probably “get fish and chips” for one meal, but she wanted to “be prepared” in the event that they couldn’t get decent food outside of the caravan park.

She wrote: “We have come for a week away in a caravan with the kids. My friend and her family booked the same week so we will spend some time with them but not all the time.

“We arrived and typically its pouring down. She has just knocked on the door to ask if we want to order takeaway with them. I said, ‘Oh the kids are just eating some bacon rib, potato and cabbage soup I brought with us’ (they love this and always request it).

“She laughed her head off and asked why I’d brought food like that with me. I said I’ve brought a big lasagne, beef stew and a chicken curry that I made as well. We will get fish and chips one night and maybe eat out, but I thought it was just better to be prepared.”

The mum added that her friend “really made fun” of her for bringing pre-prepared meals from home on her holiday, and claimed she was “nuts” for not just eating at restaurants or ordering takeaway every night.

But the woman insisted “money is a bit tight” for her family at the moment as they recently bought a house, and she wanted to keep costs down by not “wasting money” on food. She added: “I feel a bit embarrassed now though like I’m a tight a**e!”

Commenters on the post were firmly on the mum’s side. Many said her friend was “rude” to judge her for her food choices, and backed the woman’s decision to bring her own meals.

One person said: “She’s very rude! You’re prepared and nothing wrong with that. You can then spend your money on activities instead of overpriced takeaways. Each to their own I guess but I’m with you.”

Another added: “I’d much rather have homemade lasagne than takeaway! Fair enough if she was surprised but I think making fun of you is horrible behaviour from a friend.”
