‘Must-visit’ Canary Islands gem with ‘fewer crowds’ | Travel News | Travel

The Canary Islands welcome over 15 million visitors each year, with Tenerife and Gran Canaria among the most visited of the islands. But just across the ocean from Tenerife is one of the smaller Canary Islands, La Gomera, which also receives the fewest visitors out of all the islands.

Based on the most recent available statistics, La Gomera and El Hierro received an average of 69,000 visitors in 2022, according to Statista.

Pre-pandemic, in 2016, the destinations received 109.3 thousand visitors. Though it seems a high number, compared with neighbouring Tenerife, which received 4,885.9 visitors, the figure is fairly low.

However, there are plenty of reasons to consider La Gomera, known for its dramatic landscapes, lush forests, steep cliffs, and volcanic formations.

The island is also home to the Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Experts from eurochange have hailed it as a “must-visit” gem, both for its incredible scenery and its affordable options.

La Gomera can not be reached from the UK by direct flight, so typically holidaymakers first fly to Tenerife and then connect from the port of Los Cristianos via ferry or fast ferry.

Although La Gomera has a small airport serving flights between the islands. Flights are available from Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

eurochange also compiled average prices on the island, revealing the average price of a beer is €2.00 (approximately £1.55) and a meal from €12.00 (approximately £9.32).

They also analysed the average price of accommodation on Booking.com, and while there are luxury options available, hotels on Booking.com are available from £60 a night.

“One of Spain’s Canary Islands, there isn’t much that La Gomera doesn’t have to offer,” said eurochange. “While it’s not as famous for its beaches as other Canary Islands, it does have some beautiful, secluded black sand beaches.

“Like other islands in the region, La Gomera benefits from pleasant temperatures throughout the year too. And, its low light pollution means it’s an excellent spot for stargazing.”
