Juhu aerodrome, primarily used for helicopters servicing Oil and Natural Gas Commission rigs, was also closed due to waterlogging.

Mumbai‘s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport faced major disruptions on Monday, with 53 flights canceled and 27 diverted due to low visibility from continuous heavy rain.

Out of the 52 cancellations by 11 AM, IndiGo was the most affected with 42 flights (22 arrivals and 20 departures) canceled. Air India had 6 cancellations (3 arrivals and 3 departures), Air India Express lost 2 flights, and Qatar Airways canceled one departure. Alliance Air also canceled two flights, one arrival, and one departure.

The runway was closed from 2:22 AM to 3:40 AM due to extremely low visibility. After reopening, priority was given to arriving flights, causing delays for departures. Adjustments were made to handle the diverted flights.

Low visibility makes landing challenging and increases runway risks. Airlines issued advisories about delays, diversions, and cancellations. Many offered alternate flights or full refunds.

A spokesperson from CSMIA stated, “Inclement weather at CSMIA on July 8 led to temporary suspension of flights. CSMIA has deployed airport personnel across the terminals to support passengers and provide them with necessary assistance. As part of our commitment to passenger safety and comfort, CSMIA has also made provision for additional seating and water for passengers. The airport is also in close contact with local authorities,” as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Passengers were advised to check flight schedules with their airlines before heading to the airport.

Juhu aerodrome, primarily used for helicopters servicing Oil and Natural Gas Commission rigs, was also closed due to waterlogging. Normally handling 80-90 helicopter operations daily, its fixed-wing aircraft operations will be shut for a few days.
