The governors of the Russian regions of Voronezh, Kursk and Belgorod reported on their Telegram channels on Sunday that Ukrainian forces had carried out a drone and missile attack in those areas overnight. The defense ministry in Moscow said the Russian air defense system destroyed 35 unmanned aerial vehicles.
Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy in his nightly address late Saturday confirmed for the first time that Kyiv forces are pushing “the war out into the aggressor’s territory.” The beginning of a Ukrainian military campaign across the Russian border was initially reported on Aug. 6.
The head of the Belovsky district in the Kursk region, Nikolai Volobuev, said that Ukrainian forces reached that area on Sunday. “Today we do not understand some moments in the border areas,” Volobuev said in a video posted on Telegram, according to the Kyiv Independent.
Meanwhile, Russian forces launched a drone attack on 11 Ukrainian regions in the early hours of Sunday, the Kyiv Independent reported, citing local authorities. The attack caused casualties in seven areas, the news outlet said.
The capital city of Kyiv has also been targeted by Russian ballistic missiles, the local military authority said.
“For the second time since the beginning of August, the enemy has directed its air attacks against Kyiv,” the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration Sergiy Popko wrote on Telegram.
A father and his four-year-old son “were tragically killed” and three other people were injured in the air strike, Zelenskyy wrote on X. “According to preliminary information, the Russians used a North Korean missile in this attack,” he said.
