Miss Night and Day Review: Jung Eun Ji and Lee Jung Eun tackle life’s biggest issue – aging overnight in hilarious K-drama

After a lull in the genre, Netflix’s Miss Night and Day delivers a refreshingly simple yet hilarious premise: a woman inexplicably wakes up old one morning, only to return to her normal self by nightfall. Remember shows like Go Back Couple, Miss Granny, and Beauty Inside? They all played with the concept of age manipulation, leaving us with heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking humor. Miss Night and Day joins this lineage, promising similar fun with a unique wrinkle.

Miss Night and Day Review: Jung Eun Ji and Lee Jung Eun tackle life’s biggest issue – aging overnight in hilarious K-drama

Our protagonist’s daily transformation throws her life into delightful chaos. Imagine navigating work, relationships, and even a murder investigation while your appearance changes drastically every twelve hours! The possibilities for comedic misunderstandings and emotional turmoil are endless. But beneath the laughter lies a deeper question: what if we could change our age at will? Would we revisit our past, embrace our future selves, or simply appreciate the present? Miss Night and Day explores these themes in a lighthearted way, prompting us to reflect on the value of time and the beauty of every age.

Jung Eun Ji as Lee Mi Jin is your girl next door, struggling to land herself a good job. But she strives hard to get out of her pitiful situation. It is a sheer pity that her efforts don’t yield results in her favor. She even loses a good chunk of money by contacting a job scammer. There she crosses paths with prosecutor Gye Ji Ung (played by Choi Jin Hyuk) and their documents get mixed up.

One fateful encounter with a magical cat transforms her into an aged woman in the day (played by Lee Jung Eun) and her younger self in the night. Initially confused, she does not let her new circumstances beat her down. She yields the matter to her benefit and secures a job as a senior citizen. What she could not achieve as her young self, she does so successfully in her old avatar. As an older person the day, she adopts the name Im Soon, which is also her missing aunt’s name.

Im Soon (played by Lee Jung Eun) has a field day at work, being the youngest and most energetic amongst all the senior citizens hired at the Seohan Prosecutor’s Office. There she sees Ji Ung again. He transferred to that office with an agenda on his mind. He has a reputation of being a bad person but a great prosecutor. He has past traumas of his own.

At the end of episode two, we see an older lady being suspiciously murdered. This could be an addition to the missing person’s case that Ji Ung is studying. Ji Ung arrives at the scene of crime and goes after the perpetrator. The episode ends with a car approaching Mi Jin, and she might have been hit. Ji Ung sees this and tries to warn her but he is too far to reach her in time.

Coming to the pacing of the story, it is fairly adequate to keep viewers engaged on a weekend. Each episode is about an hour long, and the story is chalked out well. The first two episodes served well to put the baseline of the plot and keep the interests piqued until the next episode rolls in. It seems that there might be a connection between Mi Jin’s missing aunt Im Soon and the elderly people’s murders in Seohan region.

In the teaser for episode three of Miss Night and Day, we see that Im Soon manages to impress her seniors by saving Ko Won, a K-pop idol who enlists at the prosecutor’s office. An assailant had tried to throw acid on Ko Won. She joins as an aide to Prosecutor Gye Ji Ung’s chambers and of course, Ji Ung is not happy.

We can expect more comic moments between Mi Jin/Im Soon and Ji Ung as Mi Jin tries to keep all her secrets and work diligently. Amongst the senior citizens hired at the office, we can already see a push and pull camaraderie happening, especially between the retired detective and others.

Each cast member delivers a good performance, and sticks true to their characters. Their highly emotive expressions and use of mild farce to deepen comic effect in a given scene makes one giggle for sure. Miss Night and Day has its heart in the right place with all its elements and characters. It is certainly refreshing to see characters being themselves and not being doe-eyed about only falling in love regardless of the situation they are in.

While the plot details remain simple, the potential for character growth and exploration is vast. Will our heroine learn to appreciate her current life? Can she solve the murder mystery with her fluctuating appearance? We’ll have to tune in to Netflix to find out! So, if you’re looking for a show that blends humor, fantasy, and a touch of heartwarming reflection, Miss Night and Day might be your perfect binge-watch.
