Arts and Culture minister, Zizi Kodwa, has confirmed the passing of multi-award-winning singer Zahara.
The Destiny singer – whose real name is Bulelwa Mkutukana – was hospitalised almost three weeks ago, reportedly due to liver complications.
ZIZI KODWA CONFIRMS ZAHARA’S PASSING
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Kodwa extended his condolences to the Mkutukana family.
“I am very saddened by the passing of Zahara. My deepest condolences to the Mkutukana family and the South African music industry. Government has been with the family for some time now. Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact in South African music.”

According to Sunday World, a source also confirmed that the Loliwe hitmaker died at a private Johannesburg Hospital on Monday night with her fiancé, Mpho Xaba, by her bedside.
“The family will release a statement soon. She was with Mpho when she passed away,” the source told the publication.

TRIBUTES
Zahara was born in East London, Eastern Cape. On 9 November this year, she celebrated her 36th birthday.
Tributes have been pouring in from her fans and fellow celebrities.

Head of Digital Communications in the Presidency, Athi Geleba, wrote: “‘There is no greater gift you can give or receive than to honor your calling. It’s why you were born.’ Gone too soon.”
“I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Zahara , I hope finally finds peace on other side. She’s been through a lot, so the only thing is to hope that she’s in a better place🥺🕊. Rest easy angel,” @holymarrymercy said.
