The Michelin Guide Taiwan 2024 was announced at a ceremony in Taipei on 27 August. It crowns a fresh crop of Michelin-star restaurants and upholds the status of those previously awarded stars.
The guide, the seventh to the island’s dining scene published by Michelin, features 10 new one-Michelin-star restaurants, including Gen, a new venture by the team behind Liberté in Kaohsiung, which held two Michelin stars when it closed in December 2023.
Among the other restaurants earning their first Michelin star are Restaurant A, opened by chef Alain Huang at the end of 2023 after he had served as head chef at Andre Chiang’s Raw.
Wok by O’Bond, also in Zhongshan district, is another of the restaurants awarded a first star. It is known for its dedication to showcasing different facets of Taiwanese and Asian cuisine through its seasonal tasting menus and curated tea selections (it is the sister venue to Thei by O’Bond).
Chef de cuisine James Tseng posted a simple Instagram story showing his restaurant’s new Michelin plaque shortly after the ceremony with the caption “What a journey. So unreal.”
L’Atelier par Yao, in Taichung, is commended for the refined French cooking techniques it applies to Taiwanese produce, with Michelin recommending its “chargrilled scallop with kombu, peas and parsley sauce for a delightful mix of textures”.
There were no further additions or surprises in the two-Michelin-star and three-Michelin-star categories, whereas the 2023 Taiwan guide had elevated two restaurants – Tairroir and JL Studio – to three-Michelin-star status.
Both keep their three stars in the 2024 edition, as does long-time awardee Le Palais.
Taiwan now has 40 one-Michelin-star restaurants, five two-Michelin-star restaurants, and three three-Michelin-star restaurants.
Little Tree Food (Da’an Road) received a Michelin green star for its efforts in sustainable gastronomy. The casual vegetarian venue in Taipei is also commended in the Bib Gourmand category, which promotes good-value restaurants.
“We promote the concept of eating only vegetables twice a week and encourage customers to bring their own containers for takeaway, in the hope that each person will gradually change their eating and consumption habits to achieve the vision of sustainability,” its chef Tim Hsu told Michelin.
Michelin Green stars were also awarded to Embers, Hosu, Mountain and Sea House, Thomas Chien, and Yangming Spring.
