Melania Trump Worked Really Hard to Sound Enthusiastic About Her Memoir (and Her Marriage)

Melania Trump seems to have never heard of the concept of “yes and,” a technique from improvisational comedy that’s also helpful in situations like carrying on a human conversation. In an interview with Fox & Friends in support of her upcoming coffee table book slash memoir, which aired Thursday, host Ainsley Earhardt tossed the former first lady softball after softball, which Melania largely watched thud straight into the ether.

For example, when asked to describe the early days of her romance with Donald Trump, Melania said “we met at a party and you can read a whole chapter in the book.”

Milestones in their relationship, like their first date, characterized by the doting wife as “if you could call it a date,” owing to it consisting of an hour-plus car ride out to some property or another her future husband had an interest in, are recounted in similarly lackluster terms. Their 2004 engagement, which happened after the Met Gala, which also happened to be Melania’s birthday? “We were already at home and in black tie. He proposed at that time.”

And oh, that wedding! “As a bride you want to make sure everything goes smoothly, and it went. We had a good day.”

“It went.” Swoon, right?

The most verbose and engaged Melania got in the interview was around the topic of her modeling career, the source of those circa 2000 nude images that may or may not appear in the upcoming tome. It taught her to have the thick skin she’d need as a politician’s wife, she explained.

“I think nothing prepared me more to be first lady in front of the world than the fashion industry,” she said. “The fashion industry, it’s glamorous but it’s at the same time very tough as everybody judges you, look at you a certain way, so it can be mean world as well. So nothing prepared me more for this world than fashion. It gives you a thick skin.”

The fashion world? Cutthroat? A shock.

She describes Donald as “very special” and “caring,” their relationship as “beautiful.” But most of all, she paints a picture of a somewhat solitary life, philosophically speaking, shrugging off her connection to her husband and other family members’ decisions.

“I’m not in control of my husband, I’m not in control of his children, I’m not even in control of my own child,” she said. “He’s his own person, and we all have yes and nos, and we are all individuals. Once you live your life with respect, that’s all that matters.”

Her book, MELANIA, is set to hit shelves from Skyhorse Publishing next week.
