success Story: Jammu and Kashmir is a heaven on earth, and its natural beauty attracts lakhs of tourists every year. However, living there poses its own set of challenges. The valley faces several issues, such as terrorist attacks, political disturbances, and curfews. Ruveda Salam dealt with these challenges daily and still managed to crack one of the toughest exams in India. Despite the lack of professional coaching and limited access to study material, Ruveda worked hard and successfully cleared the UPSC exams, not once but twice. Let’s learn her story.

Who Is Ruveda Salam?

Ruveda hails from the terror-affected Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. She completed her bachelor’s degree in medicine (MBBS) but later changed her path to public service.

She faced several challenges such as political turmoil, and curfews. She also had limited access to study material and coaching.  Despite several challenges, her father supported and motivated her to pursue her goal of becoming an IAS officer.

Salam cleared the Civil Services exam in 2013. After working as an Assistant Commissioner of Police in Chennai, she again attempted to successfully clear the UPSC in 2015.

As per media reports, Ruveda began her professional journey in 2009 when she graduated from Government Medical College in Srinagar. During her intern phase, she bravely took on the J&K Public Service Commission examination, which offered 398 roles. With her commitment and hard work, she secured the 25th rank statewide and triumphed in securing one of those coveted positions. Opting for a career switch, she bid her medical field goodbye and contributed to the state civil services for a span of two years.

She’s graced many occasions with uplifting speeches, touching on topics such as training for the Indian Police Service, her deep-rooted love for her job, and key strategies to ace Civil Services examinations. She nurtures the dream of igniting the ambition in more Kashmiri girls, encouraging them to step forward and compete in these demanding tests.
