On Monday, after over 10 years of becoming an IAS officer, IAS Rituraj Singh was posted as the collector of Dewas district in Madhya Pradesh.
IAS Success Story: The UPSC Civil Services Examination is one of the toughest examinations in the country and the select few who succeed in clearing the premier exam, often have a remarkable tale to share about their journey towards becoming a civil servant. One such inspirational story is the journey of IAS Rituraj Singh, a Jharkhand resident who was raised in a refugee colony and went on to become an IAS officer.
Who is IAS Rituraj Singh?
Born and raised in a refugee colony in Sahibganj, Jharkhand, Rituraj Singh is the son of Gokul Prasad Singh, a retired railways’ employee. Growing up, Rituraj attended the St. Xavier’s school in Sahibganj till Class 10th and later completed his intermediate studies from Delhi.
After completing his schooling, Rituraj Singh earned a B.Tech degree from Bengaluru, and soon landed a job in billionaire Narayana Murthy-led Infosys. However, Rituraj soon quit his job at Infosys, and headed to Delhi to prepare for the UPSC CSE, and his hard work bore fruit in 2014 when aced the examination, securing an impressive All-India Rank (AIR) of 69, and realising his goal of becoming an IAS officer.
Techie to IAS
Reminiscing on his journey, Rituraj Singh had revealed during an interaction with UPSC aspirants in 2015 that he was an average student in his childhood and was not interested in studies. The techie-turned-IAS officer said that he used to prepare for an examination, the night before the test, but managed to earn a B.Tech degree and worked for big companies like Infosys and Tech Mahindra.
Singh further revealed that he faced several failures during his training period at Infosys and was haunted by the fear of losing his job. Ultimately, after consulting with his father, he decided to quit the job and began preparing for UPSC CSE.
Talking about his preparation strategy, Rituraj said he studied diligently from 8 PM to 1 AM, and after around one and a half years of preparation, he gained enough confidence to sit in the exam, and started believing that he could clear it.
Rituraj’s father, a grade three railways employee, credited his son’s hard work and dedication for his success, and said that he always knew that Rituraj would something significant in his life.
