Meet JEE topper who is first to get 360 marks out of 360, went to IIT Bombay, then decided to…, his name is…
In 2017, Kalpit Veerwal made history by becoming the first person ever to secure a perfect score of 360 out of 360 in the Joint Entrance Examination(JEE) Main. This extraordinary achievement not only set a record but also earned him a place in the Limca Book of Records.
When asked about his strategies, Kalpit Veerwal told PTI in 2017, “I did not study for 15 hours a day, I did not go down the usual ‘Kota route’ for IIT preparations but consistent studies helped me a lot.”
Veerwal had previously topped the Indian Junior Science Olympiad and the National Talent Search Examination. In an interview with Press Trust of India, he mentioned that while he was confident about cracking the exam, he never expected to achieve a perfect score. He also shared that making it to the Limca Book of Records was something he had never imagined.
Veerwal’s father, Pushpendra Veerwal, works as a nurse at the Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital in Udaipur, Rajasthan, while his mother, Pushpa, is a government school teacher.
He was also one of the top performers in several national Olympiads, a Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) Scholar, and a National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) Scholar.
A recent viral photo showcasing the study schedule of a 17-year-old IIT-JEE aspirant, which outlined over 18 hours of study a day, sparked a lot of attention. Reacting to this, Kalpit Veerwal, who achieved a perfect score of 360 out of 360 in the 2017 IIT-JEE and secured the top rank, shared his perspective. Sharing a post on X (formerly Twitter), Veerwal wrote, “I literally scored full marks in JEE Main 2017 (AIR 1) and didn’t study half as much. Students who study this much usually end up burnt out, skill issue.”
In a subsequent post, Veerwal mentioned that he decided to remain in his hometown instead of joining coaching centers in Kota. Despite studying more than eight hours a day, he made sure to allocate time for his hobbies, maintaining a balanced approach to his preparation.
He stated,”I had received multiple offers from Kota coaching’s to stay in their VIP hostel and stuff, they were even paying me to attend their classes. I rejected and stayed in Udaipur only, I used to play cricket, watch TV, etc with regular 8+ hours of studies. And I still felt pretty burnt out by the time I entered college, my whole first semester in IITB was enjoying lol.”
After excelling in JEE, Kalpit joined the Computer Science program at IIT Bombay. While many would take the traditional path—graduate, attend placements, and secure a high-paying job—Kalpit had a different vision. He aimed to earn enough money, so he decided to forego the placements at the prestigious colleges. To kickstart this plan, he began writing essays and sharing his preparation strategy.
Kalpit didn’t limit himself to just academics. He became a senior NCC cadet and earned an NCC A Certificate after completing challenging firearm drills, camps, and training.
In his second year at IIT, he decided to share his study tips and JEE preparation strategies on a YouTube channel. The response was incredible, with many students appreciating his guidance. In 2019, YouTube recognized AcadBoost with a Silver Play Button for surpassing 100,000 subscribers.
Kalpit founded AcadBoost, an online education platform designed to assist students in preparing for competitive exams. He even chose to skip internships to focus on growing the platform. The following year, he created his first online course for AcadBoost, which turned out to be a huge success.
By 2021, LinkedIn recognized him as one of their ‘Top Voices,’ making him the youngest among 20 exceptional young professionals on the list. He also took the TEDx stage, where he shared his journey from achieving a perfect JEE score to becoming an entrepreneur.
