Success Story: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is one of the toughest competitive exams in India and the dream of lakhs of aspirants who attempt to crack it every year. Sadly, due to its extensive syllabus and high competition, very few students manage to clear all three phases of the civil services exam. Those who succeed become role models for other aspirants. Farah Hussain is one such individual who cracked the UPSC and became an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. However, she is not the only person in her family to pass one of the toughest competitive exams. Let’s learn her story.
Who is Farah Hussain?
Farah Hussain was born and raised in a Muslim family in Rajasthan’s Jhanjhunu. Braking the stereotype that Muslim girls receive little education and married in an early age, Farah’s family supported her and motivated her to pursue her dream of becoming an IAS officer.
She was born in Nawan village in a family of administrative officers.
Farah Hussain’s All India Rank
Farah cracked the UPSC exam in her second attempt in 2016 at the young age of 26. She secured an AIR rank of 267. Notably, Aslam Khan became the first Muslim to be accepted into the all-India services after that.
Farah completed her schooling in Jhanjhunu and went to Mumbai and took admission in Government Law College. She completed her bachelor’s degree in law and became a criminal lawyer. At a young age, she dreamed of becoming a doctor but her priorities were changed as she grew old.
Belongs To The Administrative Family
Her dad, Ashfaq Hussain, undertook duties as a District Collector. She’s got an older sibling who holds a position as a legal professional within the Rajasthan High Court. Her extended family is heavily involved in public service, with an uncle in law enforcement and another serving as Joint Secretary for the state’s government. Furthermore, two of her cousins confidently occupy roles as officials for the Rajasthan Administrative Services (RAS). Altogether, her proud lineage includes over 14 individuals who hold prominent positions.
Liaquat Khan, IPS: Liaquat Khan was selected as RPS in 1972 and later promoted to IPS. He retired as IG and served as chairman of the Waqf Board. He passed away in 2020.
Ashfaq Hussain, IAS: Ashfaq Hussain, younger brother of IPS Liaquat Khan, became RAS in 1983 and was promoted to IAS in 2016. He has held key roles, including Special Secretary in the Education Department, Dausa District Collector, and Dargah Nazim. He retired in 2018.
Zakir Khan, IAS: Inspired by his elder brothers, Zakir Khan directly became an IAS officer in 2018. He currently serves as the Collector of Sriganganagar district.
Shaheen Khan, RAS: Liaquat Khan’s son, Shaheen Khan, is a senior RAS officer. He is presently the Chief Medical Officer and was previously Ashok Gehlot’s Officer on Special Duty (OSD).
Monica, DIG Jail: Shaheen Khan’s wife, Monica, is an officer who began her career as Jail Superintendent and is currently serving as DIG, Jaipur.
Shakib Khan, Brigadier: Liaquat Khan’s nephew, Shakib Khan, is a Brigadier in the Indian Army and is presently posted in Hisar.
Salim Khan, RAS: Liaquat Khan’s nephew, Salim Khan, is a senior RAS officer working in Jaipur as Deputy Secretary, Education.
Shana Khan, RAS: Shana Khan, wife of RAS officer Salim Khan, is also a senior RAS officer currently posted with Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan in Jaipur.
Farah Khan, IRS: Farah Khan followed in her father’s footsteps and became an IRS officer in 2016, securing 267th rank at the All-India level. She is the second Muslim woman from Rajasthan to achieve this distinction and is presently posted in Jodhpur.
Qamar Ul Zaman Choudhary, IAS: Farah Khan’s husband, Qamar Ul Zaman Choudhary, is an IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre, originally from Jammu and Kashmir. He is currently posted in Jodhpur.
Javed Khan, RAS: Salim Khan’s brother-in-law, Javed Khan, is a RAS officer serving as PS to Minister Saleh Mohammad in Jaipur.
Ishrat Khan, Colonel: Ishrat Khan, Brigadier Shakib Khan’s sister, is a Colonel in the Indian Army. She was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel 17 years ago and later promoted to Colonel.
