Born on December 12, 1959, Irani had a rough childhood. His father tragically passed away six months before he was born. He was raised alongside three older sisters: Shirin, Shenaz, and Roshan. Although he struggled with dyslexia during his childhood, Boman triumphed over this challenge and went on to follow his dreams.
Irani’s early days were never easy. The actor struggled with low confidence, but his mother stood by him through thick and thin. To support the family, his mother started a Farsan and namkeen shop at Grant Road. After Boman completed college, he started a job as a waiter at the Taj Hotel.
Boman Irani also supplemented his income by selling photographs of school cricket and football matches for a modest sum of 20 to 30 rupees. When his mother had an accident, he left his job to help manage the family’s Farsan shop. For the next 14 years, he juggled running the business with family responsibilities, which included getting married and raising children.
Boman had a huge passion for photography, and to pursue it, he approached Aspy Adajania, the President of the Indian Boxing Association, to let him cover the World Boxing Championships in Mumbai. Initially, he was turned down. However, after much persistence, Irani was allowed to cover the event, which led to him becoming the official photographer for the Indian Boxing Association and later for the Norwegian Boxing Team.
A massive turn came in Irani’s life when one of his friends suggested he audition for an ad. Soon, Irani was selected and featured in over 180 ads. This exposure caught the attention of producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who then offered him a role in Munna Bhai MBBS. With that, the actor’s career took a U-turn, and he climbed the ladder of success.
