Throughout his career, Shekhar featured in several films, some of which were hits, but there was also a phase in his life when he struggled financially.
Shekhar Suman, who made his debut with Utsav opposite Rekha, was initially expected to make a significant impact at the box office. However, the film turned out to be a huge flop. Throughout his career, Shekhar featured in several films, some of which were hits, but there was also a phase in his life when he struggled financially. During this challenging time, it was his wife who supported the household.
Although Shekhar became a household name with his debut, he had to work hard to maintain his position in the acting world. Interestingly, Shekhar got his first major break not in movies, but on TV with the show Dekh Bhai Dekh. In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Shekhar revealed that after moving to Mumbai, he met Shashi Kapoor through an aunt. Upon meeting him, Shashi Kapoor immediately decided to cast Shekhar in one of his films.
In just a 15-minute meeting, Shekhar was signed for Utsav in 1984 without any struggle. In this film, Rekha played the lead role.
As for Shekhar’s personal life, he met his wife Alka in Delhi, where they studied together. Over time, their friendship blossomed into love, and they later got married, starting a happy life together.
However, things changed when Shekhar faced a five-year period of unemployment, and it was Alka who shouldered the household expenses. Despite this, Shekhar is now known for his fitness, even in his later years. Over time, their lives took a positive turn, and Shekhar started gaining prominence. He also worked in low-budget films, including Manav Hatya, at the start of his career, where he co-starred with a young Madhuri Dixit.
