Thursday’s edition of OutFront took a strange turn when a panel discussed President Joe Biden’s derogatory remarks about former President Herbert Hoover, whose great-granddaughter Margaret Hoover was one of the pundits.
Hoover, of course, was president when the Great Depression began.
“My predecessor likes to say America is a failing nation,” Biden said in a speech earlier in the day, referring to former President Donald Trump predicting a market crash and saying he does not want to be another Herbert Hoover. “He wants to see the stock market crash. You know why? He doesn’t want to be the next Herbert Hoover. “As I told him, he’s already Hoover. He’s the only president to be president for four years and lose jobs, not gaining jobs.”
CNN contributor David Axelrod addressed the comments by the president, who will likely face Trump in November’s general election.
“Biden has a good comparison to make, but he shouldn’t get into side debates about, you know, silly comments by Trump,” he said.
“Well, they both seem to agree on Herbert Hoover, which is actually not the issue that I think a lot of people thought we were gonna talk about,” said host Erin Burnett, who flashed a grin before acknowledging Margaret Hoover’s relation to the 31st president.
“I never knew him,” Hoover said. “He died in ’64. I was born in ’77. But will Democrats just bury the 90-year-old talking point from the early 20th century and recognize the Great Depression was a unique event in American history? FDR couldn’t solve it, Hoover couldn’t solve it. We’ve learned a lot about macroeconomics since then.”
“Margaret, it was Trump who brought it up. He said he didn’t want to be Herbert Hoover,” Axelrod noted.
“He is not a Republican!” Hoover insisted for some reason. You might actually be agreeing with Trump here.
“Wherever he is, he should be happy that Donald Trump doesn’t want to be him,” Axelrod quipped.
