Manipur CM Singh discusses state situation with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh

Guwahati: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh had discussion about the situation in the state with Union Defence minister Rajnath Singh.Manipur has been battling ethnic violence since May 3 last year. Biren stated in X, “ It was a pleasure meeting the Defence Minister, @rajnathsingh Ji, in New Delhi today. We had an in-depth discussion about the situation in Manipur. I also requested Shri @rajnathsingh Ji to expedite the handover of the Koirengei Air Field land to the State Government.”

He also met the Union minister for Road transport in New Delhi. Biren stated, “Had an engaging meeting with Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, @nitin_gadkariJi in New Delhi. Some of the points discussed: Expedite highways construction. Repairing of the roads damaged by recent floods in the state.

Biren also met Union Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The chief minister stated in X, “Had a meeting with Union Minister of Railways, @AshwiniVaishnawJi at New Delhi. Key Points Discussed: To complete the railway works undertaking at the Noney, Khoupum side as soon as possible. Completion of the final leg of Jiribam-Imphal railway line and operationalise train service from Imphal at earliest. I also extend my gratitude to @AshwiniVaishnaw Ji for the first consignment of food grains by train at Khongsang Railway Station, Noney District”.

At least 220 people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 60,000 displaced since violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities on May 3 last year.

The riots began after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
