Despite a star studded cast and a massive budget this Mani Ratnam’s film failed to capture the audience’s attention and ultimately flopped at the box office.
In 2010, the much-anticipated film Raavan, starring real-life couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, hit the theatres. Despite the star power and a massive budget of Rs 55 crore, the film failed to capture the audience’s attention and ultimately flopped at the box office. Directed by the legendary Mani Ratnam, Raavan was expected to be a major success, but it couldn’t live up to the hype.
Why Raavan flopped, despite having a star-studded cast
The film featured an impressive lineup of talent, with renowned filmmaker Mani Ratnam at the helm. The screenplay was penned by Vijay Krishna Acharya, a celebrated director known for the Dhoom franchise. The film’s music was composed by the legendary A. R. Rahman, an Oscar winner, and the lyrics were written by the iconic Gulzar. Despite such a strong creative team, the film’s songs failed to gain significant popularity, with only one track, Raanjha Raanjha, standing out among six songs.
The Struggle at the Box Office
Raavan was released in 2010 with a budget of Rs 55 crore and grossed Rs 24 crore in its first week. However, the box office momentum soon slowed, and the film struggled to stay afloat, ultimately earning just Rs 39 crore. It was considered a massive disappointment and even after the failure Amitabh Bachchan the legendary actor and Abhishek Bachchan’s father, commented on the film’s underperformance.
A Recent Turnaround for Mani Ratnam
While Raavan remains a distant memory, Mani Ratnam has made a successful comeback with Ponniyin Selvan, a film he recently worked on with Aishwarya Rai. Ponniyin Selvan has made waves at the box office, proving that Ratnam’s magic still resonates with audiences. Raavan was made in two languages, with Abhishek Bachchan playing the hero in the Hindi version, while his real-life wife, Aishwarya Rai, starred as the heroine. Despite the star-studded cast and exceptional talent behind the film, Raavan remains one of the biggest flops in Bollywood history.
