A MAN in his 30s is fighting for his life after a “corrosive substance” was thrown on him in a seaside town.
Police have made five arrests as they investigate the alleged assault in Paignton, Devon, that has left the victim in a critical condition and with potentially life-changing injuries.
Devon and Cornwall Police say they received reports two men approached the victim at around 1.10am last Thursday, in the Victoria Street area and had thrown a chemical substance at him.
Now five people have been arrested for the alleged attack – as police step up their presence in the area and continue to investigate.
A 46-year-old man from Paignton was arrested on suspicion of applying a corrosive fluid with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
A man and a woman, both aged 44 and from Paignton, were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to cause grievous bodily harm with intent.
A 43-year-old woman from Paignton was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent.
A man, aged 22, from Paignton was arrested on suspicion causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
It is believed that all those involved are known to each other.
All have been released on police bail, pending further enquiries.
