Man buys £37 fish and chips by Tom Kerridge and spots issue

How much would you pay for a portion of fish and chips?

According to data from the Office of National Statistics, the average cost of a portion of the fish dinner in the UK is £9.88. You can get it a lot cheaper in some parts of the country, but there are luxury eateries that are probably dragging the price up.

One of these is Tom Kerridge’s fish and chips outlet in Harrods. At the luxury department store, you can expect to pay a whopping £37 for the quintessentially British dish.

So is it actually worth the money? A foodie called James Dimitri recently headed into London to find out – and provided his brutally honest verdict on TikTok.

James was flabbergasted by the prices as soon as he arrived. He noted that the cheapest beer on the menu cost £9.50, which is probably reflective of the fancy surroundings he enjoyed it in.

The problems continued when it came to portion sizes – as he was disappointed to learn that the fish supper came with just nine chips. Given the cost, he was hoping for a few more.

Food wise, he seemed to enjoy elements of the meal. It came complete with a variety of sauces including tartar sauce, pea purée and curry sauce. He admitted the batter was “nice and crispy” and the fish “seemed fresh”.

But he didn’t like the fact water appeared to leak from the fish, which left his plate a little soggy. When it came to the chips – all nine of them – they were described as “nice but not elite”.

James was unimpressed that he had to pay £6 for a bread roll to make a chip butty with, too.

Even though the sarnie tasted nice, he said it probably wasn’t worth all the money, adding: “It’s got 3.3 on Google for good reason.” In total, the meal, bread roll and two beers cost James £70.

More than 20,000 people have watched the video since James shared it – and many said they wouldn’t be able to spend so much on fish and chips.

One said: “The biggest problem is British fish and chips is supposed to be fast and cheap food. These days it’s neither fast or cheap. In my area it’s £12 min for just cod and chips.”

Another wrote: “£52.50 for fish and chips, a bread roll and a beer? Doesn’t matter how good it tastes, that’s still insane.” And a third chimed in with: “You know you’ve been stitched up when you can count how many chips you’ve got.”

It’s not all negativity, though. Kerridge’s Fish & Chips at Harrods has an 8.7 out of 10 rating on The Fork – with many reviewers branding the dish “tasty” and “fresh”. So would you try it? Let us know below.
