mamata banerjee: West Bengal: TMC slams BJP for remarks against Mamata Banerjee’s ‘sari’

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress leadership is disgruntled over comments made by BJP state President Sukant Majumdar on Tuesday.
Trinamool Congress slammed Majumdar for his comments about Trinamool Chairperson Mamata Banerjee’s sari and demanded an apology from him, calling it “unbecoming of an elected representative”.During a media interaction on Tuesday, Majumdar had made certain comments on her “sari” and used some derogatory words, Trinamool sources claimed.Majumdar had said yesterday that “Banerjee claims that she does not take CM’s salary and her pension as MP. Then where does money for her Apple mobile phone and her saris, which are all designer products, come from!”

“You will never find such saris in the market as they are specially designed and one piece is available only,” Majumdar has said.
Demanding an unconditional apology, Trinamool leadership today said that the incident, once again proved “BJP’s anti-women mindset and misogyny”.

“There is no doubt over BJP’s anti-women mindset and it has been proved time and again through their activities and comments. When the PM came to Bengal in 2021, he coined the mocking ‘Didi o Didi’ remark…Several BJP leaders have insulted her repeatedly even though she is the only sitting woman chief minister in the country.”And now, Sukanta Majumdar used a derogatory word while talking about the CM and it shows their hatred. Talking about gimmicks such as 33% women’s reservation in politics will have no benefit if it is not implemented in actions,” said Trinamool Mahila Wing President Chandrima Bhattacharya.Trinamool National Spokesperson and former Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev also expressed shock and said, “Is this the kind of language that we expect from a political party even though politics is adversarial? This is against our political culture. She has won with the mandate of the people three times. She is the only woman Chief Minister India has at this moment. This kind of language is repeatedly used against her in political battle. And it is neither befitting of the culture in Bengal nor does the Indian polity accept this.”

State Minister Women and Child Development Sashi Panja compared the comments with hate speech. “He cannot be allowed to do this. We express our concern that how he get this liberty to use such language? You cannot allow such vocabulary. Such vocabulary should be banned; this is something like hate speech,” Panja said. “He calls himself a professor. This is what you are teaching? Correct your language.”

Stating that Sukanta Majumdar’s comments reflect his “cheap mindset,” AITC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, “The CM talks about her lifestyle in clear words. She doesn’t take the benefits like salary, pension and other perks of being a former MP or serving CM. The royalty she gets is enough for her…Sukanta Majumdar is asking how she has a phone or sustains herself. Is this a dignified way of talking? Words such as ‘Dhanda’ can only be used by the BJP as they know how to respect women.”
