A major accident was narrowly avoided when the train reached Khandwa station. Its roof got stuck to the OHE line in the yard, causing an immediate power disruption
You may have seen buses and trucks going off course, but what happens when an entire train takes the wrong route? A shocking incident occurred at Khandwa Railway Station in Madhya Pradesh, where a double-decker goods train ran on the wrong track for 147 km.
The train, travelling from Penukonda (Andhra Pradesh) to Farukhnagar (Gurgaon), was mistakenly diverted due to an error by the Bhusaval railway controller. Instead of passing through Amalner in Gujarat, and Rajasthan as planned, it ended up directly at Khandwa.
A major accident was narrowly avoided when the train reached Khandwa station. Its roof got stuck to the overhead electric (OHE) line in the yard, causing an immediate power disruption. The train was carrying 264 SUV cars, valued at approximately Rs 66 crore.
What Did Railway Officials Say?
Railway officials acknowledged the seriousness of the mistake but confirmed that there was no loss of life or property. Following this incident, the Railways has decided to increase the height of the OHE line and enhance train monitoring to prevent such errors. While the mistake was due to negligence, the bigger concern is what could have happened if it had gone undetected.
It took about five hours of effort to raise the height of the OHE line, and by 5 pm, the train was redirected towards Bhusaval instead of Itarsi. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident. Central Railway CPRO Dr Swapnil Neela stated, “An inquiry has been initiated into the incident. This has not affected train operations.”
