The Goripalayam flyover, which has 61 piers and 62 spans, is designed to decongest the Goripalayam junction.
The construction work on the third section of the Goripalayam flyover bridge in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, will start within a week, authorities said.
The bridge, which is 700 meters long and 8.50 meters wide, will be built in three stages, starting with the Tamukkam-Goripalayam Thevar statue, followed by the AV bridge-Anna statue, and finally the Thevar statue-Sellur area.
The work is expected to be finished by November next year, according to State Highways Assistant Divisional Engineer R Sukumar.
“The construction of the first two portions is under progress, and work on the third one will commence within a week. As the initial two phases of works had faced some delay, we have been making efforts to complete the remaining works as per schedule,” The Indian Express quoted Sukumar as saying.
In addition, he said that on both sides of the flyover, service roads will be built. These roads will be 10.50 meters towards Thamukkam-American College Road, 7.5 meters towards North Gateway Hotel and 7.50 meters towards Sellur Arm.
Furthermore, at the intersection of Bibi Kulam and Gandhi Museum Road, a vehicle underpass (VUP) will be built specifically for emergency ambulances, he said. Sukumar also assured that there will be a significant reduction in traffic congestion in this area once the bridge is completed.
On April 30, 2023, the Highways and Minor Ports Department granted technical approval for the construction of a flyover at Goripalayam junction. The project is expected to cost Rs 190.40 crore.
The construction started on October 30, 2023. The Goripalayam junction is likely to get decongested once the flyover, with 62 spans and 61 piers, is operational.
