The Lok Sabha on Friday named 21 members to a joint committee of Houses to examine the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The panel will also include 10 members from the Rajya Sabha and must submit its report by the end of the first week of the next Parliament session.
Kiren Rijiju, the minister of parliamentary affairs and minority affairs, moved the motion for the bill to be reviewed by a joint committee consisting of 21 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha.
The Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. It was quickly referred to a joint parliamentary panel following a heated debate.
The government stated that the proposed law does not intend to interfere with the functioning of mosques. In contrast, the opposition accused the bill of targeting Muslims and attacking the Constitution.
The committee is required to present its findings by the conclusion of the first week of the next Parliament session, ensuring a timely examination of the proposed amendments.
