Lilly Pulitzer has acquired the copyrights of the fine art print library and the Key West brand from private investment group The Original I.P LLC.
By obtaining the copyrights back, the brand aims to strengthen the link between its past and present, while celebrating its vivid legacy. “We deeply respect the legacy of this print library, the work done to preserve it, and the talented artists who shaped it,” said Michelle Kelly, CEO of Lilly Pulitzer, in a statement. “The collection of prints designed from 1962 to 1985 is a true American treasure, and we are honored to reweave this vibrant history into the fabric of our brand’s heritage.”
Lilly Pulitzer is renowned for its vibrant, hand-painted prints that blend color, charm, and timeless style, with roots going back more than 60 years. The brand’s print archive captures a pivotal chapter in its history, dating back to the 1960s when Lilly Pulitzer collaborated with Florida-based Key West Hand Print Fabrics (KWHPF). Over the following 25 years, KWHPF became integral to the brand’s identity, driven by the imaginative artistry of Suzie Zuzek. Her playful and distinctive designs shaped the signature aesthetic that has delighted generations.
The copyright collection serves as a vital link to the past, restoring Suzie Zuzek’s contributions and the artistry of Key West Hand Print Fabrics’ talented team to their rightful place in the Lilly Pulitzer legacy. Zuzek’s creativity played a defining role in shaping the brand’s iconic style and helped establish it as one of the most iconic print houses in fashion history.
As part of this effort, Lilly Pulitzer acquired 20 original artworks from the collection, while the remaining fine art library will remain with Original I.P. LLC. Led by managers Becky Smith and Meg Shinkle, the private investment group will oversee future exhibitions and sales to public and private collectors, further honoring the legacy of Suzie Zuzek and Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau.
Reflecting on Zuzek’s impact, Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau remarked in 2012, “The fabulous success of the “Lilly Look” would not have been possible without Suzie’s whimsical and magical creations. I simply could not have done it without her. I believe Suzie’s talent and imagination in design should be recognized and honored by all who love “Lilly.” ”
“We honor the many talented designers and individuals who have shaped Lilly Pulitzer into the beloved brand it is today,” said Mira Fain, executive vice president of design & development at Lilly Pulitzer in a statement. “Our brand thrives on creativity and collaboration, celebrating each other’s unique contributions. Suzie Zuzek’s beautiful artistry, along with the work of many gifted artists, is a treasured part of our heritage, and we’re thrilled to share these vibrant prints with our community once again.”
