Today is the 87th birthday of legendary, award-winning actor Dustin Hoffman. He was born in Los Angeles, California, in the United States.
Dustin Hoffman’s career that spans nearly six decades
Hoffman rose to fame in 1967 with the movie The Graduate. However, he began his acting career years before then.
His very first movie, The Star Wagon, was in 1966 in which he played a middle-aged inventor whose groundbreaking innovations make others wealthy.
The American Film Institute stated that Dustin Hoffman is firstly an actor and secondly a star, and that he goes ‘to great pains to assure that his performances would be suffused with realism and with empathy’.
The legendary actor Dustin Hoffman was a fresh presence in the American cinema of the late 1960s and he remains so today.
“One of the things that constantly hits me is that when I go outside on the street, what I see is not what I see on the screen. I turn on the television, and what I see on the screen is not what I see in real life. It bothers me. I want to get closer to what I see in life.”

The institute added that ‘three decades ago, it seemed impossible to see Dustin Hoffman as a leading man. Today, it’s hard to look at him and think of him as anything else. Dustin Hoffman is perhaps the consummate leading man — both a Hollywood star and one of the great actors of his generation’.
Awards
Hoffman has been nominated six times for an Academy Award. He won twice (for 1979’s Kramer vs. Kramer and also 1988’s Rain Man).
He has also earned 11 Golden Globe nominations, winning for Kramer vs. Kramer, Tootsie, Rain Man, and The Graduate. In addition, the Screen Actors Guild has nominated him twice for an award.
These were all awards for his film work.
For his stage work, he earned a Tony nomination for the 1990 production of The Merchant of Venice, and for television, he earned a Golden Globe Award for the 1986 telecast of Arthur Miller‘s Death of a Salesman. For the latter, Hoffman won an Emmy Award for his lead performance as Willy Loman and also earned a second nomination for producing the television movie, as reported by Gold Derby.
