LA County sues pest control company alleging illegal, fraudulent and unfair business practices – Daily News

Los Angeles County is suing a pest control company, alleging it uses high-pressure, door-to-door sales tactics in violation of the law with a “don’t take no for an answer” attitude.

The Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit brought against Hawx Pest Control alleges illegal, fraudulent and unfair business practices that financially harm consumers. The lawsuit alleges that Hawx engages in unfair and deceptive business practices and seeks injunctive relief to stop any violations.

The lawsuit asks a judge to stop the company’s alleged unfair and deceptive business practices, to provide restitution for consumers who’ve been improperly charged and to impose civil penalties of up to $2,500 per violation.

A Hawx representative did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the suit brought Thursday.

According to the complaint, Hawx uses bait-and-switch tactics to lure consumers into long-term contracts that automatically renew. Consumers are allegedly misled to think they are signing up for a one-time treatment, but learn later that they have signed up for an ongoing service contract with automatic monthly payments, the suit alleges.
