Kolkata RG Kar case: Govt invites a team of protesting doctors for talks

Kolkata: West Bengal government invited a team of 12-15 doctors after the agitating junior doctors, under West Bengal Junior Doctor’s Front, wrote to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee early Wednesday morning, saying they are open to discussion with the Chief Minister.

Responding to their email, Chief Secretary Manoj Pant has invited a delegation of 12-15 doctors to state secretariat Nabanna.

“The representative team of junior doctors should have 30 members and be streamed live for transparency,” a junior woman doctor said, adding, “We are hurt that the administration has failed to respect the sentiments of the female doctors who have been at the forefront of the movement and refused to address their security concerns.” She was mentioning yesterday’s invitation by the state Health Secretary for a meeting last evening.”

“It is important to take a serious note that the common people have been deprived of your vital services, compassionate care and the healing touch over the past 32 days. Keeping this aspect in view, the Hon’ble Supreme Court, in its order dated 9th September 2024, directed that junior doctors must resume duties by 5 p.m. on 10th September 2024. You will, no doubt, appreciate and agree that as a law-abiding citizen, it is everyone’s bounden duty to adhere to these directions. Unfortunately, it has not been adhered to so far,” the Chief Secretary wrote in his letter to the agitating junior doctors.

The junior doctors are holding a General body meeting to take the decision, if they will participate in the meeting. “There are at least 25 Medical colleges in the state. We need to have at least 30 representatives in the meeting. We have mentioned it in our email. Let us see what decision is taken in the meeting,” a junior doctor said.

Pant also said, “It is expected that good sense will prevail and you will resume duties immediately in compliance with the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s order. On behalf of the State Government, we appeal to you to join duties and provide proper treatment and care to the common people.”The agitating junior doctors in West Bengal has sent an email to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday, seeking an appointment to discuss the ongoing impasse arising out of the alleged rape and murder of an on-duty medic at a state-run hospital here last month. The medic’s protest in front of Swasthya Bhawan crossed 26 hours.
