Keep root vegetables fresh for weeks with simple storage tip

There’s nothing more annoying than doing a full weekly shop packed with fresh fruits and vegetables, only for your produce to go bad before you have the chance to eat it.

Not only does this create unnecessary food waste, but it’s also hard on your wallet too. This is why it’s useful to have some tricks up your sleeve when it comes to food storage, as this can help to make your fresh produce last longer.

One food expert has recently taken to social media to unveil how you can make root vegetables – like carrots and turnips – last for ‘weeks longer’ in the fridge. TikTokker @thespicymoustache is a pro when it comes to cooking, and he says that a few simple tips can come in really handy for reducing waste.

The expert says that all you need to do in order to make your root vegetables last a lot longer in the fridge is grab a jar – preferably with a lid – and fill it up with water.

Then, take your chosen vegetables – he had chosen carrots, parsnips and radishes – and chop them up into pieces small enough to fit in your chosen container, making sure to remove any stalks or stems.

Pile them into the jar and cover them up with water. The pro says that this simple trick will help to keep them ‘crispy’ for longer – perfect for snacking on when you need something quick.

This advice was echoed by experts at The Kitchn, who also hailed the importance of cutting off any green parts first – especially when it comes to carrots, as these parts will suck up all of the moisture.

However, you can still save them if you want to reduce your food waste, as they can be used to make vegetable stock.

The experts continued: “Once the greens are trimmed off, all you have to do to keep the carrots crisp and fresh is put them in a container of water and store in the refrigerator.

“Whole carrots stay nice and crunchy in their cold water bath, and this is also a great way to store packaged baby carrots.”

The vegetables will last ‘weeks’ when storing them this way – perfect if you’ve got a few in the fridge that you won’t get round to using.
