Keep bananas fresh and yellow for 15 days or longer with ‘special’ food storage method

Bananas often feel like they ripen at lightning speed, but you can stop them from going spotty, mushy, and brown before their time if you know the correct way to store them.

Mike, a cooking expert from Kitchen Tips Online, has shared there is a “special” food storage method to keep bananas yellow for much longer, and conducted an experiment to prove it.

In a video online, Mika held up one batch of bananas with brown skin and rotting while in his other hand, he held up a batch of perfectly yellow bananas.

He said: “These bananas were purchased from the same grocery store on the same day, next to each other on the shelf.  Both sets of bananas are over 10 days old, but we stored [the yellow] bananas in a special way.”

The key to keeping bananas fresh is to find a way to absorb ethylene gas, a growth hormone that speeds up the ripening process in bananas.

Ethylene gas is produced in the banana stem and then spreads to the rest of the fruit to ripen it, but this gas is also produced by many other fruits as well such as apples, oranges and avocados.

When bananas are stored in a fruit bowl all the gases can cause the fruit to spoil at a much quicker rate and begin to go brown before its time.

Mike said: “If you can control ethylene gas, you can control when the bananas ripen. And I thought ‘Hey, if we can control ethylene gas, maybe we can extend the lives of our bananas.’”

To keep the bananas yellow, Mike stored them in a container away from the other fruit and also stored them with Blue Apple Produce Savers, which absorb ethylene gas.

Blue Apple Produce Savers cost $18.99 on Amazon for a one-year refill and can help keep Mike’s bananas yellow and fresh for 15 days longer than they normally would last.

However, you can also keep bananas fresh by not spending money by breaking the bananas apart from the stems and wrapping them in plastic wrap.

This food storage method will stop the ethylene gas from being released at the stems and help make bananas keep fresh for up to 10 days longer.

Once you have stopped the ethylene gas from being released, keep bananas somewhere mild and cool in your kitchen.

Extreme temperatures will cause the bananas to begin spoiling, and one of the worst places in the kitchen to store bananas is in the fridge.

Bananas are tropical fruits that are not used to freezing cold temperatures, and placing them in the fridge will cause the skin to turn black and rot.

Storing bananas in a container away from other fruits and keeping them from producing ethylene gas will help make them last much longer, which will help you cut down on food waste and save some money on your food shopping.
