New York Comic Con attendees experienced Blumfest 2023 on Thursday night, where Jason Blum, head of the popular low-budget horror movie studio, discussed current and upcoming releases with their directors.
First, Director Nahnatchka Khan came out to talk about her recent time-traveling horror comedy film, Totally Killer. This was followed by Bryce McGuire talking about his Night Swim, slated to release in 2024. Then finally Blum and the moderator welcomed to the stage Emma Tammi, Director of Five Nights at Freddy’s, adapted from the popular video game.
The evening ended with a never-before-seen clip featuring Josh Hutcherson’s Mike watching an eerie, old employee training video that mentions William Afton. Twice the tape glitches with quick flashes of the animatronic characters.
“Jim Henson’s company just nailed it,” Tammi said after Blum expressed how glad he was that they used practical special effects on the film rather than CGI.
She also discussed an actor cast in the film that has still not appeared in trailers. “Certainly, Matthew Lillard brings a whole iconic element and flavor to this movie that we are so lucky to have,” Tammi continued. Lillard was excited to take the role because, she said, his kids were fans of the game. Blum said his own 8-year-old daughter “didn’t understand what I did until Five Nights at Freddy’s, and someone came up to her at her camp over the summer and said– They were talking about Five Nights at Freddy’s, and my daughter said, ‘my daddy produced that movie.’ And of course they didn’t believe her. But we sort of straightened all that out. And now my daughter really feels like I have a real career, which is very exciting.”
