A little frustrated and maybe a little distracted, Zverev starts the next game poorly and sleepwalks to 0-30 down after going long twice. He needs a big serve, and finds it, 30-15.
Oh, Alex! He has control of the point but with vast swathes of the court open to Sinner’s right, he instead looks to trick the Italian and hit the ball back where he’s coming from. The flipside is, Sinner doesn’t have to move as far.
A little surprised, Sinner flicks it back into play, we continue, Zverev with the drop-shot volley at the net but again it’s not where he wants it and Sinner sprints forward before nudging it past him down the line! Great point, one woman in the crowd simply raises her arms in acclamation.
15-40, two more break points. Is that the turning point of this first set? Not immediately, no. Two big serves takes us to deuce, Zverev surges to advantage but flies into the net and jumps into a volley… long.
Another advantage, another deuce, another point that elicits groans from the crowd… What a shot! Sinner goes from right to left, corner to corner, slides into a magnificent backhand pass down the line for the third break point.
Flat-footed net play really from Zverev, and is slow to the net again on a crucial point but Sinner is off-balance with his forehand pass and hooks it wide…
