A steamed, sticky syrup pudding is a traditional British dessert that tastes delicious with cream, custard or ice cream.
Making syrup puddings from scratch can be laborious and usually involves steaming the pudding over a saucepan of simmering water.
However, TV chef Jamie Oliver has shared a quick and easy recipe to make a treacle pudding using a microwave.
Jamie said of the recipe: “Because sometimes you’ve just got to have a proper, beautiful sticky pudding.”
The recipe is 239 calories per serving and costs 43p per serving.
How to make Jamie Oliver’s quick steamed treacle pudding
Ingredients:
- unsalted butter, for greasing
- Three tablespoons golden syrup
- One large egg
- One teaspoon baking powder
- Two teaspoons ground ginger
- 75 g soft dark brown sugar
- One orange
- 150 ml whole milk
- One to two teaspoons vanilla extract
- 175 g plain flour
- 75 g vegetable suet or suet
Method:
1. Firstly, grease a one-litre pudding basin with the butter and drizzle in the golden syrup making sure it goes up and down the sides of the basin.
2. Next, put the egg, baking powder, ground ginger and sugar into a large mixing bowl.
3. Then, finely grate the orange zest, squeeze in the juice and beat the mix together. Slowly stir in the milk and vanilla extract before adding the flour, suet and a pinch of salt.
4. Once fully incorporated, pour the mix into the basin and cover it with greaseproof paper. Tie it in place with string.
5. Cook the pudding in the microwave for 12 minutes at 750W. Once cooked, allow it to stand for 10 minutes.
6. Turn it out onto a plate and serve with warm golden syrup and your choice of cream, custard or ice cream.
To off-set the sweetness serve the treacle pudding with creme fraiche or Greek yoghurt.
