Jamie Oliver’s air fryer scones are ‘crispy and golden’ with a savoury flavour

Scones are a staple teatime treat and are easier to make than most dough-based products when it comes to home baking.

That said, they can still take time and a lot of effort when using traditional methods like the oven.

Luckily for those with an air fryer, British chef Jamie Oliver has the perfect formula to make the best savoury cheese and chive scones.

Sharing the recipe on his new Channel 4 show, Jamie’s Air-Fryer Meals, the chef said: “This is a brilliant little recipe that I know you’re going to love. These savoury scones are delicious – crispy and golden, but also fluffy inside – and you can knock them together really quickly.

“Serve with soup, salad or as part of a ploughman’s lunch. And once you’ve given these a try, why not take them in a different orgive a sweet version a whirl – the possibilities are endless.”

Method

Jamie’s recipe was tested in a 4.2-litre air fryer and should serve six people. To make the scones, start by sifting the flour, baking powder and mustard powder into a large mixing bowl.

Next, add a generous pinch of cayenne pepper and sea salt and gently stir. Cube the butter and rub into the dry ingredients to form cornflake-sized pieces.

Grate the Cheddar into the bowl – coarse shavings are best. Now finely chop the chives and add to the mixture before stirring everything to combine.

Make a well in the centre of the mixture and pour in the milk, then bring everything together into a soft, dry dough using your hands. Try to avoid overmixing and only add a splash more of milk if necessary.

When the dough is ready, turn it out onto a flour-dusted surface and quickly work the dough into a 3cm thick circle, then cut into six even-sized triangle wedges.

Brush the tops of the wedges with a little milk, then coarsely grate over the remaining cheese and sprinkle with a little pinch of cayenne pepper.

Before cooking the scones, rub the inside of the air fryer basket with one tablespoon of oil then load the scones in and cook for 12 minutes at 180C – (work in batches if necessary).
