Italian region where Italians go on holiday is a hidden gem and ‘very affordable | Travel News | Travel

Located in the heart of Italy, Tuscany is one of the most popular regions for tourists looking for an unforgettable holiday.

Whilst many holidaymakers enjoy a visit to some of the regions more populous cities, such as Florence, there are many hidden gems in Tuscany that are much quieter.

Jennifer Stevens, Executive Editor at International Living, noted that more rural spots in the region offer a different lifestyle that makes it the perfect choice for a relaxing getaway.

She explained: “It’s a place that offers up hard-to-resist lifestyle benefits: a slower pace of life, great food, fine wines, long history, extraordinary art museums, glorious natural landscapes, and a comfortable climate.

“And when you venture off the well-beaten tourist path, you’ll find that Italy is much more affordable than you probably think – including Tuscany. In fact, it’s a country that offers a high standard of living even on a modest budget.”

Lucca

In particular, International Living suggested that tourists planning a trip to Tuscany should consider visiting Lucca.

Referred to by locals at ‘Città d’arte’, or ‘City of Art’, this Medieval commune is home to a number of attractive buildings in the city centre.

However, guests to the city can still find beautifully preserved history by venturing further afield, with a wall surrounding the Lucca, which was constructed during the Roman era to keep invaders out, still standing to this day.

Arezzo

Another part of Tuscany that International Living advised travellers to consider is Arezzo, highlighting that it offers a slice of past and present Italian life.

In parts of the city, including the centre, tourists can marvel at buildings that have been a part of Arezzo for centuries, including the ruins of the Medici fortress that is surrounded by traditional vineyards.

Nevertheless, the lower section of the city was built much more recently and contains all the features and services people will need during their time away from home.

Volterra

Finally, International Living recommended taking a trip to Volterra, a city found at the top of a mountain in the centre of the region.

Officially called the City of Alabaster, the most notable thing about Volterra is the number of famous sculptors that once inhabited the area, with many stating it is one of the most beautiful cities in all of Italy.

Featuring around 10,500 residents, Volterra is by no means a large location, however offers a wide range of delicatessens, wine bars, coffee shops and restaurants to suit all tastes.
