Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Mohammedan SC 4-0 in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Saturday.

Subhasish Bose and Manvir Singh netted a brace each as the Mariners did the double in the Kolkata derby.

Mohun Bagan SG started the game on the front foot as Mohammedan players looked instantly out of their depth. They took the lead in the 12th minute. Liston Colaco’s corner was headed on for Jason Cummings at the back post. The Aussie passed it to his compatriot Jamie Mclaren, who in turn set up Dipped Biswas.

The young defender’s tame shot from just beyond the six-yard box found Subhasish Bose unmarked infant of goal. The Mariners captain kept his cool to slot the ball past a hapless Padam Chhetrri for the lead

Come the 20th minute, Mohun Bagan had another corner and promptly got their second goal. Cummings’s corner was powered his header past Chhetri for the second. Ironically it was Mohammedan’s Manvir Singh who was marking his namesake.

Mohammedan were stunned. Mohun Bagan were the better side on paper as well as the stands and the football on the pitch looked the part.

When the Mariners let their foot off the gas for some time, Mohammedan just could not capitalise on their chances. Mirjalol Kasimov and Carlos France appeared a mere shadow of their selves.

In the 43rd minute, Subhasish scored his second of the night, finishing off a well-worked goal straight from the training pitch. Cummings’s pin-point free-kick was masterfully back-heeled by Mclaren into the path of his skipper, who calmly finished off the chance with panache.

There was more misery in store for Mohammedan. Kasimov saw red for lashing out at Tom Aldred as he kicked the Mohun Bagan defender twice after losing the ball.

After the restart, Tom Aldred went into the referee’s book for a foul on Lalremsanga. From the free-kick, Alexis Gomez blazed his effort over.

It was back to business as usual as Mohun Bagan got their fourth with Manvir adding his second of the night. Liston played Cummings down the left flank and he curled a cross into the box. Manvir snuck in from the right to stand tall to guide his header past Chhetri in the 53rd minute.

Mohammedan made changes Gaurav Bora, Adison Singh and Lalrinfela came in place of Sajad Parray, Lalremsanga and Mohammed Irshad respectively. Mohun Bagan responded by bringing on Abhishek Suryavanshi and Dimitri Petratos in place of Sahal Abdul Samad and Manvir.

Mohun Bagan continued to control proceedings as either team opted for more changes. Greg Stewart replaced Cummings and Ashique Kuruniyan replaced Liston for Mohun Bagan as Mohammedan brought on Amarjit Singh and Marc Schmerbock in place for Alexis Gomez and Manvir Singh.

Petratos could have added a fifth but his effort struck the post in the 81st minute as Maclaren too missed the target barely five minutes later.

Jose Molina too decided to use all his available substitutes as Saurabh Bhanwala replaced Dippendu.

Even though Mohun Bagan kept searching for their fifth, the Mariners found a home away from home.
