The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) recently took to social media to clarify to its beneficiaries whether they will be receiving a R500 grant for Christmas.
SASSA has always been plagued by fake news proposing various claims and promises. The R500 Christmas grant is just one of them, SASSA explained to its beneficiaries on 18 December 2024.
R500 CHRISTMAS GRANT
The post called on SASSA recipients to apply for a R500 Christmas celebration grant for South Africans. The grant is said to be from President Cyril Ramaphosa. SASSA refuted the claims made on the flyer and said it’s not coming from the agency. It wrote in its post:
“[FAKE NEWS ALERT] SASSA clients and the public at large are advised to ignore the information below as it is FALSE and does NOT come from SASSA.”
Some of those who responded to the post on Facebook said the Christmas grant was a good idea and wished it was not fake news. One comment said: “It is a good idea to the grant beneficiaries although it is fake. If those who are working are paid bonuses during this period, why can’t you give the beneficiaries a Christmas grant?”
Others in the comment section decided to complain about still not receiving their SRD grants. This is despite being promised that payments would be made from 17 December 2024.
WHAT ARE THE SRD GRANT PAYMENT DATES?
SASSA had confirmed in November that SRD grants would be paid early. It said payments would start from 17 December till 23 December. The South African reported on 13 December 2024 about SASSA’s reminder to beneficiaries about receiving their payments from this week.
SASSA clarified at the time that not everyone would be paid over this seven-day period. It said payments were only for individuals who were approved for the month of December. It also urged recipients to check on the SRD website when they are likely to get payments in their bank accounts.
