The Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony Russo, are making a grand return to the MCU, and they’re not coming alone! Robert Downey Jr. is also back in the Marvel universe, this time as the infamous Doctor Doom. The actor, who famously portrayed Iron Man, will now take on the role of Dr. Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and RDJ confirmed the exciting news at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. RDJ wowed the crowd in Hall H by revealing himself as the Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom on stage.
Anthony Russo emphasized the complexity and entertainment value of Doctor Doom, calling him one of the most fascinating characters in fiction. He stated that to do justice to the character, they needed the best actor in the world. Highlighting the Marvel Universe’s endless possibilities, he introduced the one person fit for the role: Robert Downey Jr., who then took center stage and unveiled himself as Doctor Doom.
RDJ stunned fans by appearing in the iconic green Doctor Doom robe and metal mask. As he removed the mask to announce his return, the crowd erupted in excitement. “New mask, same task,” he declared, confirming his MCU comeback. According to The Hollywood Reporter, RDJ is set to return for two Avengers films. The Oppenheimer actor will collaborate with the Russo Brothers on Avengers: Doomsday, slated for a May 2026 release, and will reprise his role in Avengers: Secret Wars, expected in May 2027.
