To enhance accessibility, these meals and water are conveniently available at counters near unreserved compartments on platforms.
Indian Railways has joined hands with Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) for a fresh plan to offer clean and affordable meals and snacks to passengers, especially those traveling in General Class Coaches.
Shobhan Choudhuri, the General Manager of Northern Railway, mentioned, “We’re providing passengers with wholesome and clean ‘Economy Khana’ both onboard and at stations. We’ve put measures in place to ensure quality and hygiene are maintained,” as reported by HT Auto.
This move comes as summer travel heats up. An IRCTC official stated, “With the summer season approaching, we expect more passengers. We understand the challenges faced by those in unreserved compartments, who may struggle to find budget-friendly meal options.”
IRCTC is rolling out two types of meals: Economy meals and Snack meals. Economy meals are for those on the move, while Snack meals suit those looking for lighter options. They are priced at Rs. 20 and Rs. 50 respectively.
An official highlighted, “To make it easy, these meals and water are available near unreserved compartments on platforms. Passengers can grab their refreshments straight from these counters, saving them the hassle of searching for vendors or stepping out of the station.”
Initially launched at 51 stations last year, the service has now expanded to over 100 stations. Stations like Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Renigunta, Guntakal, Tirupati, Rajahmundry, Vikarabad, Pakala, Dhone, Nandyal, Purna, and Aurangabad are now part of this initiative.
