Increase in child support and foster care grants

Finance Minister Enoch Gondongwana delivered the 2024 Budget Speech on Wednesday, 21 February, announcing increases in permanent social grants, with the aim of staying abreast of inflationary pressures and ensuring greater accessibility.

Affirming the government’s commitment to achieving social and economic justice, the budget also focuses on tackling inequality and deprivation, aiming to bolster the economy and uplift society.

Over the past three decades, the government’s mission has been to redress historical injustices and combat systemic discrimination.

Permanent social grants increased

Since 1994, budget allocations have prioritised economic growth to address societal disparities. In line with this commitment, permanent social grants have been augmented to keep pace with inflation and expand accessibility.

Some of the adjustments include a R50 increase in the foster care grant and a R20 increase in the child support grant, providing vital support to families in need. Beyond welfare enhancements, the budget allocates resources to critical sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure development, and economic revitalization.
