Anupam Kher on Starting Out in Bollywood
In a heartfelt message, Kher described the pivotal year of 1984 when he made his mark with Saaransh. “1984 was a make-or-break year for me. Every day was nerve-racking and tested my character… I never wanted to be known as a fluke actor,” he wrote, crediting Mahesh Bhatt for casting him as a grieving, elderly father in the film. At the time, Kher’s portrayal of a 65-year-old man, despite being in his 20s, shocked audiences and showcased his depth as an actor. “People thought I was arrogant and delusional… I wanted to make a mark,” he added.
On Championing the Common Man
Reflecting on his career, Kher discussed how his background influenced his portrayal of relatable, everyday characters. He often channels the emotions he felt as a child in his performances. “Whenever I portrayed a common man, I play him on screen… It is always him and the common man that I represent on screen,” Kher explained. He expressed gratitude for the challenges that molded his acting, including struggling days spent sleeping at railway stations or going hungry as he pursued his dream.
Vijay 69 as a Reflection of the Spirit to Never Give Up
In Vijay 69, Kher takes on the role of Vijay Matthew, a 69-year-old man determined to compete as a triathlete, a role Kher says resonates with his own perseverance. Preparing for the role required Kher to learn swimming and train extensively, leading to several injuries but fulfilling a lifelong commitment to staying active and challenging himself. “My journey in the movies would have been incomplete without Vijay 69,” he said, calling it the perfect film to honor his 40-year journey.
Overcoming Setbacks and Embracing New Challenges
Kher’s career has been marked by resilience in the face of personal and professional setbacks. He recounted surviving facial paralysis during the filming of Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! and recovering from bankruptcy in 2002, which he used as material for a stage play. “I went bankrupt… but I didn’t crib, didn’t blame the world. I worked harder,” he shared. His passion led him to Hollywood, where he starred alongside actors like Robert De Niro and Jennifer Lawrence, proving that challenges only fueled his resolve.
A Message for Dreamers
Kher concluded with a message for dreamers, urging them to continue striving despite obstacles. “I request everyone to be a dreamer. Dreamers achieve what others don’t… they live a life that’s fantastical.” He quoted his Vijay 69 character, Vijay Matthew, saying, “Sapno Ki Koi Expiry Date Nahin Hoti” (Dreams have no expiry date), underscoring his belief in lifelong growth and resilience.
Speaking of the film, it is Netflix and YRF Entertainment’s fourth collaboration. The film is set to release on November 8.
