An American living in the UK tried to make bangers and mash for the first time – and the results are interesting.
Members of Reddit forum r/UKFood were shown the finished product and most said the same thing, with issues swirling around the use of gravy.
User @Fromthecitothegate wrote: “My first attempt at bangers and mash as an American living here.”
While the mashed potatoes and sausages, topped with onions and a lake of gravy, looked appetising, members of the forum had choice words for the American.
Plenty of praise was piled onto the dish for its onion gravy but some questioned the consistency of the dish’s sauce.
One wrote: “YES to the onion gravy although I would suggest making it a little thicker and pouring it ‘volcano style’ over the mash.” A volcano style pour was agreed with by another user who suggested adding a few more items to give it a bit more British charm.
“Big Yorkshire pud with the mash in the centre,” they wrote. “The Yorkshire pud then catches the run off from the volcano. Alternatively individual Yorkshire puds filled with mash and a sausage stuck in the top and filled with gravy.”
But one user warned off of the Yorkshire puddings as it skirted “very close to Toad in the Hole”.
Other users told the American to stay strong with the amount of gravy they used, writing: “Disregard all amateurs saying this is too much gravy.”
Another user added: “There’s no such thing as too much gravy! You could serve me an Olympic swimming pool filled with gravy with some mash and sausage somewhere in there and I might still want an extra gravy jug on the side.”
A third joked: “Thought it was a brown plate… get some gravy on that mash and add some veggies – you’ll never grow tall if you don’t eat yer veggies…”
