Hollywood might be the place many people dream of becoming a part of, but it can also be a very dark place, especially for women. Over the last few decades, several female actors have spoken up about the body shaming, harassment, and unnecessary scrutiny they have faced in their careers. Florence Pugh is joining the said list and is doing it quite fearlessly too.
The Oppenheimer star has faced her share of judgement, assumptions, and trolling. She recently spoke about how exhausting the industry was for women with the continuous judgement, harassment and lack of proper representation even now. Here’s what Pugh revealed about the same.
Florence Pugh Sheds Light On ‘Exhausting’ Hollywood Industry
During a conversation with The Times, Pugh shed some light on how tiring it was to be a woman in the industry. “There are fine lines women have to stay within, otherwise they are called a diva, demanding, problematic. And I don’t want to fit into stereotypes made by others,” she expressed. The actor added that it was “really exhausting for a young woman” to be, not just in the Hollywood entertainment industry, but also in other different industries.
“I remember watching this industry and feeling that I wasn’t represented,” she further explained. Pugh stated that still remembers seeing “god awful headlines” about popular actress Keira Knightley not being “thin anymore.” She saw women get “torn apart despite being talented and beautiful.” The starlet, who entered the industry as a teenager, felt that people only want to talk about “useless crap” about how the female actors look all the time.
Florence Pugh About Being Body Shamed At Nineteen Years Of Age
All of the above is why Pugh stopped caring to abide by the rules. When she first started off, she was body shamed by studio executives at nineteen years of age. The experience made her question her decision to become an actor. At the time, Pugh felt like she had made a “massive mistake” by making that decision. The executives selected her for a role and began to shame her body immediately after. That wasn’t all they did either.
They reportedly asked her to change her physical appearance in ways they wanted it to be. “All the things that they were trying to change about me – whether it was my weight, my look, the shape of my face, the shape of my eyebrows – that was so not what I wanted to do, or the industry I wanted to work in,” Pugh divulged. This wasn’t the experience she was expecting.
She understood that “this was what the top of the game looked like” which made her feel like she had made a huge mistake getting into the industry. Despite the challenges she faced, Pugh managed to impress not only the audience but also the critics. With a diverse filmography at a young age, the actress has a long way to go and will have many notable contributions.
