Iceland’s new crisp-inspired chicken strips were not what I expected

It is easy to be sceptical when a well-loved brand comes out with a new product, especially if that is a crisp brand moving into the frozen food market.

That is what first crossed my mind when Iceland announced new chicken strips in their freezers.

Available now in store and online you can get Iceland Salt & Pepper Shake Crunchy Coated Chicken Strips 500g for £4 or Iceland Chilli Hot Wave Crunchy Coated Chicken Strips 500g also for £4.

Very happy to try them out, Iceland sent me samples to taste test and I was very surprised with the results.

And spoiler alert, I hope they keep these in stock because you need to try them now.

Iceland Salt & Pepper Shake Crunchy Coated Chicken Strips

Firstly, air fryer cooking time says 10 minutes, but I think it depends on your air fryer as this is based on a Ninja. At the 10 minutes mark they were cooked, but for my cheaper air fryer they needed longer to crisp up.

Anyone else familiar with these crisps and old enough to remember the little packet of salt you had to shake over them will love the fact that you shake seasoning over the cooked chicken.

This is a lovely nostalgic touch and the seasoning is perfect. A sweet, salty, spicy, umami flavour explosion on your tongue, the hits of garlic, paprika, star anise made every bite a delight.

They had a good batter around moist 100% chicken breast and I was impressed with the quality of the chicken.

And they are an elite meal if you use them in a brioche bun with mayo and shredded lettuce – oh my goodness, how I could eat one now. These should be a permanent member of the Iceland product family. 10/10

Iceland Chilli Hot Wave Crunchy Coated Chicken Strips

I love a chilli heatwave Dorito, they are just the right amount of spice for me, that builds the more you eat.

As with the Salt & Pepper Shake chicken strips, unless you have a Ninja air fryer, you may need to cook for longer than 10 minutes to crisp up.

As soon as you bite into the crumb coating, there is a burst of that famous chilli heatwave flavour, and it washes over the front of your taste buds with a kick of the cayenne pepper spices.

For me, these are spicy, but in the best, thrilling way, my husband didn’t think they were that spicy, so depends on your scoville threshold. Delicious with cool mayo, what a great Friday night treat.

We had them watching The Traitor finale, and they are ideal for great snacks when entertaining guests because they pack a flavour punch they won’t forget, and all for £4. 9/10

Get them from Iceland or the Food Warehouse now for £4 each or in the three for £10 deal.
