Vijay Varma, Dia Mirza, director Anubhav Sinha and Monika Shergill of Netflix showed the trailer of IC 814: The Kandahar Hijackto a select group of media people last week in Mumbai. After the trailer preview, Anubhav Sinha revealed some interesting bits from the show which will ensure that it stands out from the rest of the hijack series and films
IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack trailer preview: Anubhav Sinha reveals ASTONISHING trivia: “The hijackers played antakshari with the passengers; passengers told them, ‘Aap kabhi Meerut aayenge toh milyega’”
Anubhav Sinha began by saying, “When you travel in a train for 36 hours, toh toilet ke bahar jhagde ho jaate hai. Now imagine an aircraft, which has 5 toilets. There are 200 passengers who are going to use it for 7 days. And there’s no one to wash the toilets.”
He also added, “On top of it, some passengers were vegetarians and they were in Afghanistan.” He raised laughs as he remarked, “It’s good that veganism had not become big at that time. Nahin toh kaand hi ho gaya hota! Bhook se marr gaye hote!”
On a serious note, Anubhav Sinha said, “Why did this (the hijack) happen? Will an aircraft be hijacked just to release one person? Was the decision to release three prisoners planned in advance? Or was it decided on the go?”
In the trailer of IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, a Western journalist is shown asking why the hijacked aeroplane was stationed at Kandahar in Afghanistan. On this, he said, “That is also an interesting detail. Who was running Kandahar at that time? The newspaper stated that it was the Taliban but some might suspect that it was the USA or Russia who were (also calling the shots).”
Anubhav Sinha continued, “The plane landed in Kandahar on December 25. The negotiation team reached there on December 27. Why? It’s easy to say ‘Bureaucracy mein toh late hota hi hai. Kaam time pe karte nahin hai’. But it was not easy to decide ki ‘Hum jaa rahe hai baat karne’. If you see the events in terms of the emotional and tactical information, it becomes a different event altogether.”
Anubhav Sinha then stunned the journalists when he revealed, “The hijackers were not professionals, like ek ke munh pe eye patch laga hua hai aur ek ke munh pe scar hai. When the hijack got over, yeh passengers ko gale milke gaye hai. They exchanged phone numbers. The passengers told them, ‘Aap kabhiMeerut aayenge toh milyega’! The hijacker who slashed the captain on his neck hugged the latter and apologized to him, citing that he didn’t intend to hurt him but he had no choice. On the last day, the hijackers played antakshari with the passengers. They even shared their problems with each other. After all, aap saat din kya karenge? Kitna time darayenge?”
He added, “These are the things that you don’t know and writer Trishant Srivastava and I had to go to very large stretches to authenticate this information.”
Besides Vijay Varma and Dia Mirza, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack also stars Arvind Swami, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Patralekhaa, Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Aditya Srivastava, Amrita Puri, Kanwaljit Singh, Pooja Gor and many others. It releases on Netflix on August 29.
