Based on one of the most terrifying attacks on Indian citizens was the Kandahar Hijack from 1999 where many innocent lives suffered over a span of week as a flight taking off from Kathmandu was hijacked by militants. Portraying this nightmarish incident on Netflix, Anubhav Sinha is all set for the premiere of his series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack which features a host of actors like Vijay Varma, Arvind Swamy, Dia Mirza, Patralekha, Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah, Manoj Pahwa, among many others.
IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack: Anubhav Sinha reveals the ‘most political dialogue’ he has ever written and it is about tea and coffee; says, “Tea and coffee are characters in the show”
Recently in a round-table set up as the male actors along with filmmaker Anubhav Sinha sat together to discuss the show and several aspects, they had an interesting comment to make about tea and coffee. Sinha, who has also written the show, revealed an intriguing observation on how he turned these hot beverages into key characters in the show and how they were used as essential metaphors in multiple situations. While Arvind Swamy recalled the scene where the shot is about viewers following a cup of tea across multiple rooms where multiple characters are introduced to them, Anubhav Sinha opened up about how he came across this shot.
“That was the last day of the shoot and I had done all the scenes except one where there was a scene where four sets of people are in four different rooms (had to be introduced). We had just had our lunch break and now I had to go out on the set and explain to them about the shot. I wasn’t moving and my mind was totally empty. I kept thinking about the shot and it suddenly came to me.” He went on to add how the shot has received a lot of praises. “People who have seen the show always talk about this shot where you follow a cup of tea also chai and coffee are a character in the show,” he shared.
Furthermore, as the conversation during the roundtable continued, Anubhav Sinha also remembered how a scene between Arvind Swamy and Manoj Pahwa turned so perfect. In the scene, Arvind Swamy (who is also a South Indian in the show) is reading a newspaper along with his colleague Manoj Pahwa as they engage over tea and coffee. While Arvind says, “Coffee is like a religion. There is no room for misinterpretation” and responding to it was Manoj who added, “Tea is like blind faith”. Commenting on it, Sinha added, “It is the most political dialogue I have ever written in my life” which left everyone at the roundtable in splits.
IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack premiered on Netflix on August 29.
